Crossroads & Catalysts

Directed by Ensemble Tempus Fugit
Katie de la Matter – harpsichord
Jamie Akers – lute
Emily Baines – recorder
Debipriya Sircar – voice and sitar
Jonathan Mayer – sitar
Sanju Sahai – tabla

Explore cross-genre musicmaking with Ensemble Tempus Fugit and special guests Debipriya Sircar (Indian Classical voice/sitar), Jonathan Mayer (sitar) and Sanju Sahai (tabla) in blending the rich traditions of Indian Classical and European Baroque music, drawing inspiration from tunes collected and composed in 18th-century India.

You’ll experiment with ways of playing together, including different approaches to improvisation, ornamentation, and the elements of music, culminating in a celebration of music from both traditions. The course will include Hindustani melodies documented in a 1780s European manuscript and settings of British folk tunes by Muthuswami Dikshitar from 1800, as well as songs based on Hindustani ragas.
