JS Bach – Suite for Violoncello solo No. 1 in G major BWV 1007
JS Bach – Ciaconna from Partita for Solo Violin No. 2 in D minor BWV 1004
JS Bach – Two Canons for violin and cello from The Art of Fugue BWV 1080
György Kúrtag – selection from ‘signs, games and messages’
Zoltán Kodály – Duo for Violin and Cello Op. 7

Judith and David showcase the violin and cello, first as solo instruments in two canonical works by Bach, and then together in music spanning 250 years. The Bach Cello Suites are amongst the most beloved and revered repertoire for solo cello, whilst the Chaconne from Bach’s D minor Partita has gained an almost mystical reputation, inspiring generation after generation of violinists and composers. Bach’s Art of Fugue is another work which has provoked and intrigued performers since its creation. Kurtág’s music is amongst the most expressive and enthralling of any written in the past century whilst his compatriot Kodály’s folk-music influenced Duo is a case study in creating a work for two players which has the real essence of dialogue and conversation.
