The evolution of the bow and the potential of the instrument in the right hand

Raph Hurwitz

The talk will cover the evolution of the violin bow from its beginnings as a simple tool, to the expressive paintbrush that it is today. Starting back in Mirecourt, we will discover why the lace industry was so influential in the bow’s development, how one violin-maker changed the entire industry, and the future of bow making today. There will also be a chance for the players to involve themselves in a workshop environment where they can see how a simple stick of wood can completely change the sound of the instrument, exploring flexibility, wood choice, dimensions, and camber.
