EVENT CANCELLED – Crafting Music, Crafting Democracy: Gustav Holst’s Pedagogic Initiatives

A Talk given by Marilyn Billingham

Gustav Holst’s 150th anniversary this year has been marked by unprecedented performances of his music. This presentation foregrounds his less celebrated contribution to music education. Marilyn will examine how his innovative methods can be seen as a musical realisation of the Arts and Crafts Movement, made famous by William Morris. She will explore the common commitments of Morris and Holst to:

  • extend democratic access to the arts,
  • privilege the artistry of the medieval and the ‘early music’ repertoire
  • demonstrate the perceived benefits of working in artistic communities.

and, through the indefatigable work of Imogen Holst, the educational initiatives at Dartington and Aldeburgh.
