Sing with Stile – Purcell and Friends

Singing alongside members of Stile Antico, participants on this course will explore some of the wonderful verse anthems and motets written by Henry Purcell and his contemporaries in late seventeenth century London. Singers will have the chance to work on a wide range of pieces as well as focussing on stylistic interpretation, led each day by a different member of Stile Antico. The course aims to build general confidence in choral singing, as well as working on more specific vocal and choral skills. Participants will be introduced to a feast of wonderful early Baroque English music in a relaxed and supportive environment. Scores will be available for purchase on arrival at a cost of £10 each.
Standard: Suitable for all, though some choral experience is desirable
Repertoire will include the following:
Henry Purcell – O God, thou art my God; My heart is inditing; Hear my prayer; I was glad; Lord how long wilt thou be angry; Jehova quam multi sunt; Funeral sentences: Man that is born of a woman; In the midst of life we are in death
John Blow – Salvator Mundi; Behold O God, our Defender; Let thy hand be strengthened
Pelham Humfrey – Lift up your heads, ye gates
