City, Court, and Chapel
Directed by The City Musick
William Lyons – early reeds, recorders, flutes, bagpipes
Richard Thomas – cornett, trumpet
George Bartle – sackbuts
This course will explore the multi-faceted world of Italian renaissance music. From the palazzi of the d’Este, Gonzaga, and Medici families, to the gilded splendour of the Basilica di San Marco in Venice, a huge variety of musical styles flourished and influenced the rest of Europe. As well as the familiar works of Andrea and Giovanni Gabrieli, we will shine a light on the lesser-known genius of others, including Priuli, Ingenieri, Picchi, and Grillo.
An extra feature will be a voices and instruments session, in which players and singers can work together on polychoral works of the period.
Applicants should be of competent technical ability and be good sight-readers. This will add greatly to the enjoyment to be gained from the course.
Players of shawm, dulcian, cornett, sackbut, violins and viols are all welcome.
