Stephen Montague – composer
Alex Julyan – Visual Artist

Composer Stephen Montague and Artist Alex Julyan lead a project exploring parallel creative processes in art and music. This is a unique opportunity to explore ‘equivalence’ across the two artforms combining the fundamentals of making artwork and composing music using both traditional and experimental techniques. Those with an interest in the visual arts will work in a well-supplied art studio with Alex, and the composers working with Stephen will work in an adjacent studio. Composers will be able to write for the instrumental resources of a string quartet and wind quintet, along with other Summer School participants. The daily sessions will introduce ideas through making, playing, demonstration, and discussion between the two disciplines. Each session will be thematic with composers and artists exploring the same ideas in different media. While each group will work in separate studios each day there will be opportunities to share ideas and experiences across the week as the two processes are brought together into a whole. The final work in sound and vision will be part of a celebratory performance on the final afternoon of the Summer School heralding a fitting finale to year one at Gresham’s.
