The Encore Café at the Jazz Café
What are the songs that you love best in the world? Your Desert Island tunes, bangers, lollipops, party pieces, smash hits (or the ones you can’t believe aren’t famous), songs your mother taught you, torch songs, funny ones, encores? The ones you’d take any opportunity to sing, or the ones you’ve never dared to perform, but really want to try?
The Encore Café at the Jazz Café is for absolutely everyone who loves to sing, and this course gives every participant the chance to share and explore the songs that they love best of all. Bring music from any genre and any era: including folksongs, pop songs, operatic arias, American songbook, cabaret, jazz, musical theatre, and renaissance, baroque, classical, romantic and contemporary art songs… any mood, for any moment. We’ll also sing through a few favourites as a group (no sight-reading skills needed), and we’ll serve up and share our absolute “favourites of the favourites” in the last session of the week.
What you’ll need
Please bring at least three songs that you love. The ideal length for each song is roughly 3 minutes, so that we can all explore as much repertoire as possible over the week. If the piece has a piano accompaniment, please bring two copies of the music. You are also welcome to sing a capella or accompany yourself on any instrument you have with you.
Instrumentalists will have the chance to work with Huw Wiggin on a range of favourite jazz and popular standards.
