This concert showcases the vast expressive range of the violin and piano duo. Mozart’s sonata K454 from 1784 is a perfect expression of classical style, with poise, elegance and drama contained within the bounds of a perfectly balanced structure. Thea Musgrave’s work was premiered at the Cheltenham Festival in 1960 and despite being only ten minutes long contains a huge variety of material within four very concise movements. Amy Beach’s Violin Sonata from 1897 is a rich and powerfully expressive work, fully deserving to stand as one of the great late Romantic sonatas.
