Chamber Choir Course
Gavin Roberts – director
Edward Elgar’s ‘From the Bavarian Highlands’ and George Shearing’s ‘Songs and Sonnets’
Elgar’s six-movement suite was inspired by his travels in southern Germany and combines folk-influenced rhythms with the composer’s characteristic warmth and lyricism. Shearing’s settings of Shakespeare, written for choir and piano, bring together classical technique and jazz harmony in music that is both sophisticated and accessible.
The choir will rehearse once each day under the direction of Gavin Roberts, focusing on ensemble, as well as clarity of text and its musical expression. The course concludes with a concert presenting both works.
Course Outcomes
– The pleasure of singing together in a supportive and enjoyable atmosphere
– Greater confidence in listening and responding within the ensemble
– Development of phrasing, tone and expressive communication
– Insight into two contrasting English choral styles
– A shared sense of achievement in the final performance
Is this course for you?
This course is designed for experienced amateur singers who enjoy the challenge of chamber choir repertoire. Participants should be confident reading music and holding a part within a small ensemble, though note-perfect sight-reading is not required. Singers are encouraged to familiarise themselves with the music in advance. No recordings or written preparation are required — just enthusiasm for shared music-making and focused rehearsal.
