Thomas Carr
Thomas is a pianist and teacher based in Cheltenham, UK. He is a graduate of St Hilda’s College, Oxford, where he studied an academic music degree specialising in composition under Professor Martyn Harry. He has worked as Head of Instrumental Studies and Teacher of Music at Gresham’s School, Norfolk, and has recently taken up the post of Teacher of Music and Accompanist at Cheltenham Ladies College. As a collaborative pianist, recent performances have included Carmina Burana (version for two pianos and percussion) in Cheltenham, Brahms’ Liebeslieder Waltzes at MSSF 2024, Schubert’s Winterreise at Holkham Hall, Grieg’s Haugtussa at Bury St Edmunds Cathedral, and Schumann’s Dichterliebe at Ipswich Minster. As a soloist, he has given regular recitals, including a complete performance of Alexander Scriabin’s 24 Preludes at the Jacqueline du Pre Music Hall, and of Poul Ruders’ Dante Sonata at Christ Church Cathedral. Thomas has worked asrépétiteur and assistant conductor on operas such as Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin,Stravinsky’s The Rake’s Progress, and Mozart’s Don Giovanni, Steve Reich’s The Cave and several world premieres. Thomas is a prolific composer and was the recipient of the Royal Academy’s Gareth Walters Prize in 2017. In recent years his works have been performed at Westminster Abbey, Tate Modern, and the Royal Albert Hall and across the UK.
