Thinking of Joining Our Summer School? Here’s Everything You Need to Know

Booking a summer school is exciting — but it’s completely natural to have questions.

Where will I stay?
Will I be good enough?
What’s the food like?
How full are the days?

We’ve gathered the most common questions below to help you feel confident and ready to join us.

🛏 Accommodation – Comfortable, Friendly and Close to the Music

Our accommodation is simple, comfortable, and just a short walk from all rehearsal spaces—no long treks between sessions. Rooms are welcoming and practical, giving you a peaceful space to rest after a full day of music-making. Bedding and towels are provided, you just need to bring your own toiletries.

If you have specific needs or accessibility requirements, we’re always happy to discuss them in advance.

🍽 Food – Shared Meals, Shared Community

All meals are provided, and everyone eats together in the convivial central dining room. There’s something very special about sitting down with fellow musicians after a rehearsal, conversations flowing as easily as the music. Many friendships begin over lunch.

We cater carefully for vegetarian, vegan, and dietary requirements—just let us know in advance.

During the day, our café is open for hot drinks, homemade cakes, and light bites. It’s a much-loved hub for catching up between sessions.

In the evening, after concerts, the atmospheric theatre bar opens—the perfect place to unwind, celebrate performances, and enjoy relaxed conversation long into the night.

🎶 Ability Levels – Am I Good Enough?

This is the question we hear most often.

You do not need to be a professional musician. You do not need perfect sight-reading. You do not need formal qualifications.

What matters most is enthusiasm, openness, curiosity, and a willingness to take part.

Our tutors are experienced in working with a range of abilities, and ensembles are shaped to ensure everyone feels supported and stretched—never overwhelmed.

Solo opportunities are available, but never compulsory. Confidence grows naturally during the week, and many participants surprise themselves with what they achieve.

If you love music and are ready to immerse yourself in it, you are experienced enough.

🎒 What Should I Bring?

Here’s a simple guide to help you pack:

Essentials

  • Your instrument (if applicable)

  • Music stand (if required – we do have them, but it’s always helpful if you can bring one)

  • Concert black or performance outfit

  • Comfortable rehearsal clothes

  • Walking shoes (there are beautiful woods nearby)

  • Swimwear (for early morning and afternoon swimming, if that’s something you’d enjoy)

  • Notebook and pencil

  • Water bottle

Optional

  • Chamber music you’d love to try

  • Folk song ideas

  • Snacks

  • A sense of adventure

We’ll send more detailed joining information after booking—but there’s no need to overthink it.

🕒 What Does a Typical Day Look Like?

Each day is full, varied, and inspiring — but always with space to breathe.

You might begin with an optional early swim or Tai Chi session before breakfast.

Then:

  • Session 1: Choir, orchestral workshop, or chamber music
  • Coffee break (with café open)
  • Session 2: Group playing, solo singing, folk songwriting, instrumental workshops
  • Lunch together—often followed by an informal lunchtime concert
  • Session 3: Jam Band, harpsichord, ensemble work
  • Tea Break–back to the cafe, or perhaps a game of croquet on the Chapel Lawn?
  • Session 4: Choir notes & confidence, West African drumming, Tango dancing
  • The first concert of the day
  • Dinner
  • Evening concerts–usually at least two more
  • Bar open to unwind and socialise

It’s immersive—but you can pace yourself. There’s also time to walk, reflect, practise quietly, or explore the surroundings.

🌿 A Setting That Inspires

We are surrounded by beautiful grounds—woods to walk in, open skies, and the occasional passing steam train adding a touch of magic to the atmosphere.

And just a short stroll away is the lovely town of Holt, with its independent shops, cafés, and Georgian charm—perfect for an afternoon wander.

The setting truly becomes part of the experience.

Still Wondering?

If you’re unsure about anything at all—accommodation, ability level, what to bring—please just get in touch.

We love answering questions, and we want you to feel completely confident before you arrive.

Summer school is about music, yes—but it’s also about connection, courage, creativity, and joy.

If that sounds like something you’d like to be part of, we would be delighted to welcome you.
