Tango Orchestra Course
Mirek Salmon, Caroline Pearsell & Daryl Kellie – directors
Participants will learn to play arrangements of tango music as they would have been performed in The Golden Age of the 1930s-1950s. This course is open to players of the following instruments: piano, concertina/accordion/bandoneon, guitar, string instruments, woodwind and double bass.
Course Outcomes
This is a unique opportunity to play the original arrangements from the Golden Age of the Tango orchestra. Creative Caminito has commissioned arrangers and transcribers to provide these resources that you will not be able to access anywhere else. Learn about the magical playing of the fraseo, explore the range of instrumental effects unique to Tango and marvel at the soaring variaciones played by the bandoneons to bring a piece to a close. Together as a group we will work as an ensemble and in sectionals to bring this music alive. We will then have an opportunity to perform for dancers in order to experience this wonderful marriage of music and movement. For those that are keen there will be an opportunity to learn the basics of tango dancing which we feel allows us, as musicians, to get a closer understanding of the music.
Is this course for you?
This course is aimed at players with a good sightreading ability and proficiency on their instrument but do not worry as music can be sent in advance of the course. Pianists in particular should be of Grade 8 equivalent standard. The arrangements for the other parts vary in level so we can accommodate a wide range of playing standards. Please do get in touch to let us know your playing level. Some music will be sent to participants in advance.
