Jonathan Mayer will talk about the work of his father, the late Kolkata composer John Mayer, in making melodic phrasing sound as Indian as possible within western notation and the work he now does to further this idea. He will also present the use of Indian ragas (modes) and talas (rhythmic cycles) in composition and how there are similarities to Indian raga performance and Renaissance/early Baroque ornamentation. He will also look at the use of temperament and how it has changed in Indian music over the past 250 years.
