Kim Murphy – bassoon
Kim studied bassoon at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and has since built a rich and varied career as a performer and educator. She has toured extensively with many of the UK’s leading orchestras, including the Royal Opera House, English National Opera, Welsh National Opera, City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, BBC Concert Orchestra, BBC Symphony Orchestra, and Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra. She is currently playing Contra Bassoon with the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra and is a member of the Equinox Ensemble.
Her performing work also spans numerous West End productions, including Phantom of the Opera and Oliver!, as well as a wide range of recordings and broadcasts with the BBC and other organisations including appearances at the Proms.
Kim is equally passionate about music education. She has taught at all levels—from early years to conservatoire—at institutions such as the Guildhall School Junior Department, Royal Academy Junior Department, The Purcell School, and Wells Cathedral School. She also ran “Tuneful Tots,” a nursery music business in North London, and continues to work in early childhood music with the London Symphony Orchestra’s Discovery Department.
A dedicated advocate for musicians, Kim serves as a Governor for the Royal Society of Musicians of Great Britain. She is currently training to run the 2026 London Marathon in support of the RSM.
